Bore Siting - How We Do It

For bore siting we use the ABEM-LUND resistivity profiling system.

We start by laying 400 metres of cable in a straight line on the surface of the ground. We then drive metal electrodes into the ground at 5 metre intervals and connect them to the cable take-outs. Finally, a laptop computer and instruments containing sophisticated electronics are connected to the middle of the line.

A switchbox starts switching between pairs of electrodes and a current source pumps current into the ground. The electric potential between pairs of electrodes is measured. Each measurement gives information about one point underground, and thousands of these measurements together give the resistivity structure of a 400 m long, 60 m deep section of the ground.

From this resistivity structure we interpret the geological structure of the ground - locate major faults, fracture zones, geological boundaries as well as the water-bearing zones. Thus we can determine the prime location for a water bore.
